Sunflowers or helianthus literally mean as they are spelt, combining the Greek words of sun and flower. Their essential flower meaning lies in warmth, positivity, power, strength, and happiness due to bearing such a strong resemblance to the Sun itself. In Greek mythology, it’s tied to a story of a nymph who becomes the flower after losing her love. Victorian flower language ascribes a meaning of gratitude to the dwarf Sunflower, while it’s considered a good luck charm for occasions like graduations and new businesses in China. Of course, Sunflowers also feature prominently in works from artists like Van Gogh.
They are native to North America but you can imagine our delight when the lovely Richard & Eleanor contacted us from Robin's Glen to see if we would like to stock their Kilkenny born and bred sunflowers. This organic farm produces the most wonderful organic feed for both animals and birds and we were lucky enough to have their beautiful sunnies to brighten our days during August and September.
Not only did the Robin's Glen sunflower fields garner lots of local attention but we could hardly keep these blooms stocked as soon as they hit the shop floor.
Several times a week during the height of their season, we received boxes of sunflowers in early stage of blooms and literally with bursts of light, they would open their petals wider showing so much joy.
How wonderful to have such gorgeous organic growers in Ireland, a couple who are so passionate about the land we live in that their passion is to grow all their flowers to build a better bee and butterfly world and what a priviledge for us to be able to spread their word and provide such beautiful Irish grown blooms to fill so many homes with happiness. We so cannot wait for sunflower season to come soon again and hurrah for Richard & Eleanor of Robin's Glen.
