Our Westbury Christmas

Our Westbury Christmas

And so this is Christmas & we hope that you all have had a good celebration with lots of fun.

We thought you might like to see snippets of how the lovely Westbury Christmas came about in case you are in town & would love to feel the warmth of the festive hotel we created again this year.

We always say that we live Christmas a long time in Appassionata - well we start planning all the festive decoration during the summer when all others are only thinking about the beach.  The collaborative process comes about through conversations with the creative Westbury design team and ourselves with sketches, moodboards and then Ruth & Kasia go to Europe to buy the vessels, decorations and all things nice to suit the various hotel areas with aplomb.

October is always a month of planning & preproduction with many calls to suppliers to make sure that all those pallets of Christmas joy arrive in on time ready to be sorted for their new homes in trees, garlands and wreaths.

Starting in November with a deadline for the day the Grafton Street lights will be switched on, we first tackle the biggest behemoth of all, the main tree.  This tree is the most important in the house between the amount of photos taken in front of it, the sheer thousands of Instagrams it appears on, the volume of families who hang around it bringing together and joy, the fun of its own festivity.  We wanted to create extra impact as guests and staff members alike walked up the stairs to the main part of the hotel & added in 2 x 2metre crafted woodend nutcrackers.  Hailing from Germany, these 2 were specially constructed to match to hotel's new refurbishment & to flank the tree with flourish.  The tree was filled with a mixture of luxurious and earthy texture all dressed with sparkle using paper, wood, natural ingredients like cinnamon and cones and then filled with berries and bounties of ruby, pink, taupe, duck egg blue and burgundy to dress the green.  A mass of red berries were placed on top in place of a star to add a further richness.  A particular joy here is the effect the mirror backdrop plays with the tree and lights to give a voluminous effect for this magical tree.  But we have also added in fun with Nordic Santas & sleighs to cheer the kids delight.

We also always think that the entrance to a hotel is the most important space of all as it is the first encounter and experience for a guest to sense the space they will stay in.  Keeping that idea in mind, we dressed the spaces below the stairs with 2 trees that took their look and feel from the main tree. Dressing the banisters and trees create an entrance of awe.

But before anyone reaches for the revolving door, they are greeted with the most beautiful scent of real Irish pine foraged from Clare dressed with the cutest robins we could find, berries and bilberry.  This structure of mdf, lights, wire and foliage is a true production but is a popular choice for all the hotel guests.

And then if you explore the beautiful spaces around the hotel from the stunning Wilde restaurant with its more botanical festive feels to a luxe copper vibe for cocktails in Sidecar to then the foraged twigs and hydrangea filling the Gallery with gold, you can see each area has been created and accessorised with thought and love.

Lots of claps to our amazing Appassionata team and a huge thank you to all the superstars at The Westbury who not only humoured us as we dragged crates and lights around their space for a week but fed and watered us too always with a cheeky grin.

Happy Christmas to you all and hope you get to see some of our lovely festive decorations before they get packed away in the New Year to make way for the new adventures that 2017 will bring.

X Ruth
